Ultrasonic animal chasers are the most humane and environmentally-friendly way to keep potential pests out of your garden; they emit high frequency ultrasound which drives animals away but is inaudible to humans, and harmless to fish and birds.

The Mains Cat and Fox Chaser 100 has three switchable frequencies and three volumes, depending on which animals you need to repel and the size of your garden.

The variable frequency allows you more control over which animals to target: to scare dogs and cats, use the medium setting; for rats, foxes, rabbits and mice, use the lowest frequency. Although be aware that differential scaring can be difficult (ie it's not necessarily possible to scare foxes without affecting cats, which will be able to hear lower frequencies as well as high. (Note that the lower frequencies are sometime audible to humans).

- It puts out random bursts of noise covering an area of 8000sqft or a semi-circle of 100ft (30m) (100ft radius). The loudest volume is good for large gardens with trees and foliage, the lower volumes allow you to take into account smaller plots close to the neighbours.

- Plug the transformer directly into a mains socket in the house or a shed, and run the 30ft (10m) cable into the garden. The mounting plate (see picture) attaches to a swivel arm, allowing the unit to be pointed in a wide variety of directions left, right, up and down.

Of course, as with all methods involving animal behaviour, we can’t guarantee effectiveness in every situation, however, our own experience and the feedback we get from customers suggests that this device is effective in almost all situations. If the cats have a habit of feeding and fouling in your garden, it can take 14-28 days to deliver the full deterrent effect. 'Occasional' visitors will usually be stopped within 7 days. Why the motion sensor? This infra-red (PIR) detector turns the device on when a warm body appears in the controlled area. This has an important purpose: researchers have found that animals can become desensitised to the noise if they realise that random sounds are not associated directly with their presence in the controlled area. With the motion sensor, the animal learns to associate the noise with its own movement, and is much less likely to stop being afraid of the noise.

I have had a lot of problems in my rear garden with cats and foxes for a long time - the fouling has been constant.
