Ultrasonic animal chasers are the most humane and environmentally-friendly way to keep potential pests out of your garden; they emit high frequency ultrasound which drives animals away but is inaudible to humans, and harmless to fish and birds.

The Squirrel Deterrent 100 has three switchable frequencies and three volumes, depending on which animals you need to repel and the size of your garden. The variable frequency allows you more control over which animals to scare: to scare dogs and cats, use the medium setting. For squirrels, rats, foxes, rabbits and mice, use the lowest frequency. (Note that the lower frequencies are sometime audible to humans).

- It puts out random bursts of noise covering an area of 8000sqft or a semi-circle of 100ft (30m) (100ft radius). The loudest volume is good for large gardens with trees and foliage, the lower volumes allow you to take into account smaller plots close to the neighbours.

- Plug the transformer directly into a mains socket in the house or a shed, and run the 6.5ft (2m) cable into the garden. Low voltage outdoor cable can be easily extended if required: simply cut the wire and add additional length up to 10m. The mounting plate (see picture) attaches to a swivel arm, allowing the unit to be pointed in a wide variety of directions left, right, up and down.

Why the motion sensor? This infra-red (PIR) detector turns the device on when a warm body appears in the controlled area. This has an important purpose: researchers have found that animals can become desensitised to the noise if they realise that random sounds are not associated directly with their presence in the controlled area. With the motion sensor, the animal learns to associate the noise with its own movement, and is much less likely to stop being afraid of the noise. As with all methods involving animal behaviour, we can’t guarantee effectiveness in every situation, however, our own experience and the feedback we get from customers suggests that this device is effective in almost all situations.
